It's true! Last week I was offered (and accepted) a full-time (temporary) freelance writing job for a series that is going to run on the Discovery Channel. I was hired by a local television company, Tapestry International, that works out of Sea Bright, New Jersey. I am going to be one of the segment writers for an 8 hour program called "Great Inventions with Bill Nye."
This job came up all of a sudden. I had heard about this company for awhile and sent them a resume months ago. They called me two weeks ago, scheduled an interview, and let me know they were hiring immediately. Although the timing isn't great (I'm now trying to schedule my kids in camp full-time at the last minute, and we're going away next week, and I still haven't gotten the pool finished), I felt that this opportunity was too good to pass up.
The best parts about the job, besides it being a tv writing job:
1) I WON'T have to commute into New York City (or re-locate to L.A.). The office is located at the lovely Jersey Shore. What an awesome location.
2) I was told I can work from home if needed, which is great, because flexibility is key when you have kids. However, I am going to try to go into the office as much as possible because after 10 years of working from home -- I need a change of scenery.
3) I'm going to be paid! To write! For TV! Okay, so it's not a fortune, and a large chunk of my salary will be eaten up by camp expenses, but it's still good for the ego to be paid in cash for services rendered.
4) The job is a temporary assignment - starting immediately and running until mid-September. Therefore, if for whatever reason, things don't work out, I walk away in September, no big deal. Hopefully, things will work out, and other juicier assignments will follow.
So, I'm pretty excited about this new writing opportunity. The kids are a bit scared, not sure what this all means for them. And things are definitely going to be a lot busier this summer than usual. But I do think that things will work out, because I have to believe that things happen for a reason.
Unfortunately, my blogging may be spotty this summer.
Congrats!
