Last night, my partner, Sandy, and I headed to the Holmdel Barnes & Noble for a book reading/signing by Adrienne Barbeau who is promoting her new memoir, There Are Worse Things I Could Do.
First thing I have to say is that I was very impressed by Adrienne. She's really nice and down to earth. Unlike Brooke Shields, she allowed her fans to snap photos. She personalized the signed books if you requested, and she was just really open and un-Diva-like. She was approachable and friendly. And didn't seem to be at all full of herself.
She's also a lot shorter than I thought, and looks great. I wish I knew her secret to staying so thin. But other than having a long and successful career (Maude, Carnivale, The Fog, Grease, on Broadway) she is also a happily married woman who gave birth to twin boys at the age of 51. For us mothers, she a very cool, hip representative. I only hope I look half as good as her by the time I'm 45!
Sandy and I asked her if we could send her stuff to read, and she was very pleasant and encouraging, and even opened her palm pilot to retrieve her Manager's address for us. Who knows, maybe she's this nice to everyone, and lets her Manager be the bad cop (he may just tell us to screw off). But, at least now I sense she isn't an asshole. She seems like she would be great to work with. And we do have the PERFECT PART for her (an older, yet still sexy barkeep) in the feature-length script Sandy and I have written.
Also, her memoir is pretty good. I keep trying to put it down so that I can get some work done, but it keeps pulling me back in. She's had an interesting life. And of course, I always like to know what drove famous people to succeed and how exactly they made it big.
For us over 50-ers, she sounds like a hip, cool representative and is a testament to the fact that life gets better as you get older!
