About a year ago my daughter and I took a Girls-Only weekend trip to Salem, Massachusetts. After immersing ourselves in all kinds of witchy stuff and plotting our visit to Lizzie Borden's house on the way home, an idea was born. The idea was for a Young Adult novel about paranormal teens struggling with their abilities while trying to overcome the typical teen problems (dating, sex, independence, identity crisis, school, bullying, pimples, etc). It would be a sort of HARRY POTTER meets THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENS.
In actuality, I had this idea for a while and had imagined it as a TV series. I even won an award for the series proposal. At the time it was called CAYCE PLACE because it centered on a special school for kids with psychic abilities. But while lunching in Witch City, it was my daughter (15 at the time) who leaned in and offered a challenge. She wondered why I didn't just write a novel instead of a TV series.
Why indeed? What a novel idea.
