Been reading a lot about the inequality in Hollywood, not just about the lack of jobs for female directors/writers but also how warped it is that actresses aren't allowed to age. Kind of sad that by the time a woman turns 29 in Hollywood she's deemed TOO OLD to play the wife or girlfriend to Leonardo DiCaprio or George Clooney or all the other old farts whom we are expected to believe can still kick ass and get barely-legal ass well into their 60s and 70s.
Talk about male fantasy. Sadly, it's porn mentality that rules Hollywood, and I call it porn mentality, because women exist as beautiful blank slates, who are just here for men's gaze, sexual gratification, and entertainment. And the men in power, who make these films, see nothing wrong with that. They don't even question that maybe, just maybe, WOMEN AREN'T HERE FOR MEN'S ENTERTAINMENT. We have our stories to tell too!
This got me thinking....I should write an updated version of LOGAN'S RUN, the 1970s movie about a dystopian society where anyone over the age of 30 is euthanized to deal with overpopulation. We all know this is ridiculous. Why kill off all the old men of power, when you merely have to kill off any woman over the age of 29? After all, according to Hollywood, men shouldn't have to look at aging women, overweight women, women of color, lesbian women, transgender women, or heaven forbid, somebody's gross mother or decrepit grandmother. If not as sex objects, then why bother including women at all???
In a society, where women are told to look pretty and be generic -- i.e. we're not interested in hearing your stories or telling your stories-- this is not really a sci-fi movie, but real life. It's FIONA'S RUN, a race to stay alive, and be relevant, and be heard in a world where aging women are told they don't matter, and are therefore both invisible and disposable.
Does the world need another adrenaline-fueled CGI superhero movie or spy movie or war movie? Not in my silly female opinion. But then again, nobody's asking me. I'm a woman well over 29, who should shut up and know nobody cares what I think.
