greetings from iowa
I'm back home from my whirlwind tour of Iowa, my first time ever to the Midwest. It was definitely an eye-opener for me, and an interesting journey into America's heartland. We went to Iowa on official business, busily researching The Grotto of the Redemption and the man who built it, Father Dobberstein.
Over a two day period we interviewed over 20 people in their 70's and above, who were around when Father Dobberstein was building the Grotto (he began it in 1912, and worked on it until his death in 1954). From these interviews we are hoping to piece together an intriguing screenplay about a complicated man who dedicated himself to creating his Grotto.
The trip went well, except for the seven hour delay we experienced in the Minneapolis airport on our way home. First they said our plane was delayed because the bathroom door was broken. Then there was a warning light broken. Finally, the thing was delayed indefinitely as mechanics were called in. Needless to say, we found another flight home to Newark.
It's good to be home, although my sinus infection/ear ache has now become a pulsating toothache. I had a hard time sleeping last night, and pretty much woke up in pain this morning.
Also, I arrived home around midnight on Saturday, had Sunday to rest and recoup, and hang with my family. Unfortunately, my husband left on his own business trip early this morning (which we didn't know about until I was already in Iowa) so we're just ships passing in the night this week. He's only gone for two days, but the timing could have been better. I also can't help but be annoyed with his work since I have to plan my own yearly business excursions many months in advance (because I'M THE MOMMY! and mommies can't just leave spontaneously or without careful, meticulous planning), but my husband's work assumes that he can just drop everything and take off at a moment's notice.
men have it so much easier when they become fathers then when a woman becomes a mother...
