As some of you may know, I have been working the last 18 months on developing an original comedy series about motherhood, called Breeding Ground. After a lot of hard work, my producing partners and I have begun to pitch the concept to cable networks and trying to get talent attached. Unfortunately, this month, HBO announced a project that is RIDICULOUSLY SIMILAR to ours.
HERE'S OUR BASIC PITCH:
Breeding Ground, an original single-camera episodic comedy based on the novel, Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It (Seal Press, 2003), tells the stories of an eclectic group of Philadelphia moms who share their ups and downs while navigating the turbulent waters of contemporary marriage and motherhood. In the spirit of Sex and the City, Breeding Ground is intelligent, edgy, and sexy -- an adult comedy that explores the modern mating habits of a new breed of women.
HERE'S HBO'S PROJECT:
HBO has ordered a comedy series pilot from Lydia Dean Pilcher, executive producer of the channel's original film Iron Jaw Angels. The untitled project will shoot in the fall in New York, with Pilcher and Becky Mode (JoJo's Circus), who wrot the pilot, attached to produce. The single-camera half-hour follows a group of thirtysomething upper-class Manhattan women as they try to juggle motherhood with careers, spouses and other responsibilities. Talent and director are not yet attached. HBO declined to comment.
