touchstone requests 'breeding ground'
I've had a lot going on, and I have lots to share here. But since you've listened so patiently to me whining, I thought I'd share the good news first. Are ya ready? O.K. here goes:
TOUCHSTONE TV HAS REQUESTED TO SEE MY SERIES PILOT FOR "BREEDING GROUND".
For those of you following my saga, Breeding Ground, is the name of the series I created with my partner, Sandy Longo, based on Andi Buchanan's book "Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It.
Sandy and I have gotten initially good feedback on the series proposal, but have been treading water as far as getting this thing read by those who actually greenlight TV series.
We have been querying production companies, large and small, touting our series, as if we were door-to-door salesmen selling the greatest, bestest-sucking, vacuum cleaner in the history of man.
Last night, Sandy left a message on my answering machine, telling me that Touchstone called and requested the pilot. I had to listen to the message twice, because I was convinced she had said "Keystone TV" or something other than Touchstone.
And that's when I started doing the happy freaking dance. A true-blue, real live, BIG TIME, TV production company HAS REQUESTED OUR PILOT. I quickly googled Touchstone TV to get a fuller picture. These are the folks who produce mostly for ABC (Lost, Desperate Housewives, Alias, 8 Simple Rules), but also bring us SCRUBS (which I love with a passion) and Kevin Hill (another show with high critical praise).
Last night I realized that if nothing else ever comes from this ride, I can always tell my grandkids the story of how the brilliant people behind Desperate Housewives and Lost, once REQUESTED a pilot from Little Ol' Me. I can marvel them with how far you can go, if you just believe and never give up on your dreams (even if they seem crazy and unrealizable).
I know that this is still a long-shot. After all, we live in NJ, we aren't connected to anyone in the biz, don't even have agents yet, we've never even schlepped coffee as writing assistants, and UNFORTUNATELY FOR US, TV deals ARE NOT handed out like ecstasy in Hollywood parties.
BUT, this is just the teaser I needed to revive my deflated ego and jumpstart that "go get 'em attitude" that has gotten me this far. And it couldn't come from a better place. Touchstone and ABC have revitalized network TV almost single-handedly this year. They are gamblers, taking chances on risky, original programming, and they are obviously people of very good taste. Maybe, just maybe, they will be willing to give two desperate housewives from NJ a chance.
Hurray for you! Of course, I always knew Breeding Ground was a hidden treasure...good luck!

Wow! Congratulations on the pilot thing - I wouldn't be able to sleep at all! Love you description of NJ - so much is quite normal and then there is so much that is just freaky weird - who are those people?

Congrats on the request from Touchstone TV; I googled them myself a couple of weeks ago when I saw that someone from Touchstone had visited my site, and they are indeed responsible for so many great shows. Your shot gives me hope that I have a shot, even though I can't currently afford to live in L.A.

Sorry about the recent deaths close to you. Good luck on the diet (and feel free to be bitchy during, it means you're sticking to it), and have fun during the house search. Don't think of it as negative, think how cool it is. I mean, how often do you uproot and start over? I think you'll find something you love - it's not going to suit everyone's needs perfectly, so make sure what's most important to you is met, and then update the rest to bring it around to everyone's needs. You can't build a cul de sac, for instance, so maybe that should be one of the key selling points of any place you look at.
Now, the good. The great! Wow. I want to know more! Please take us through this process as you go along! And are you letting folks read your script? Congratulations. Wow, wow, wow...
